What are some things I could do to lower my utility bill besides?
Make sure you have good insulation in the attic, seal all windows and cracks, put new insulation around doors. If you have a fireplace, make sure the flue is tightly closed. Minimize use of the oven during summer and cook outdoors if possible. If you use the over during winter, leave the oven door open a few inches on winter mornings and let the heat warm the kitchen. Eat warm foods in winter and cold foods in summer. Open the blinds on windows that face the sun during winter and keep them tightly closed during the summer. Buy a recirculating water pump and run it for an hour per day to bring warm water to the bath or shower. Plant shade trees on the south side of your house (in the Northern Hemisphere). Use fans to help keep cool in the summer and a reversed ceiling fan to circulate warm air in the winter.
