How do you audit utility bills for acuracy?
The only way I would think to do this is to first ensure that the rate on your bill is correct, by referencing the rate schedule where you can find it. Find out who regulates the electric utility, then ask them what the set rates are. Then, check you meter on the cutoff date of the previous bill, and check it again on the next cutoff date. Compare this usage to the second bill. It may not match exactly, because it would depend on the time the billing period cut over, but it should be close. i did this once, and my usage as billed was close to what I was billed for. In the old days, when meter readers used to walk all over the neighborhood gathering readings, there were more errors. But now that most matters are read electronically and remotely, the error rate is a lot lower.
