What can you do if you know your utility bill is way too high but the?
The utility company wont do anything about it, because they have no responsibility for the ways and amounts in which you use gas and electricity. Their price, per million therms of gas or kilowatt-hours of electricity, may have risen over the years. But those rates are controlled by State public-utility commissions. The companies charge what they are legally allowed to charge, but no more. The high levels of your bills reflect the amount of heating and cooling you do in your home, the number and duration of your showers and baths, and the frequency and volume of your laundry. Plus, of course, how many lights you leave on at night and how many appliances you use extensively. You can replace your appliances with modern, energy-efficient units. They will save you money, but it takes years for your savings to recoup the cost of the new appliances. The people at the utility companies arent going to come out and do anything to your home, because there is really nothing they can do. And they are too polite to tell you that the problem is most likely you, and your practices and behaviors not the rates they charge you for power, which are the same as they charge your neighbors.
