Can I claim a utility bill in my sole trader tax return that is in?
We have never had an issue adding names to accounts. Only one person can be responsible for the account, so they won't add another person in that regard. They can however add another name to any correspondence and also authorise another person to make any changes. At the end of the day only one person can be responsible for any unpaid bills, but 2 people can be on the invoice. This is how we have set up our utility accounts (Council, gas, electricity, mobile, etc) and we have changed providers a few times. Each one had no problem. Also insurances and other services do the same thing. For the tax side of it, the name on the ABN would have to be on the invoice. Also you need to calculate what is actual business usage. You can't claim 100% of an electricity bill if you are also living at the premises. Any calculations need to be reasonable and documented. If you want to be accurate, use a watt meter to measure energy used. Most tax accountants will do a one off consultation to answer questions like this. It is best to seek professional advice for tax related affairs.
